Lisa Dempsey was born in Wisconsin in 1956.  Preferring the warmer weather of the South, she now resides in Buford, Georgia.

Lisa works in the medium of clay, predominantly in mid-fire stoneware.  She is a self-taught clay artist who began her journey with clay in the early 1980’s when she discovered slip casting.  Feeling the need for more freedom of creativity in her work, in 1998 Dempsey began exploring throwing on the wheel and hand-building with clay.

Lisa’s signature pieces are her Fern Vessels. She creates these ceramic sculptures using actual fern fronds harvested from her backyard garden. After impressing the ferns into clay slabs, Lisa intricately cuts and assembles them into a bowl or vase shape.  Her glazing process and techniques have evolved over the years and she continues to explore the vast variety of possibilities of working in clay.
